Confirm the edition, device/user/core entitlement and supported operating system on your order before installing. Back up important files first. 2. Verify the licensed server version, Standard/Datacenter edition, physical core count and virtualisation rights. A key alone does not include every core or CAL entitlement. 3. Obtain official matching deployment media through your legitimate Microsoft licensing channel. Evaluation media may require a supported edition-conversion procedure and cannot always be activated in place. 4. Install or upgrade using the supported Microsoft setup workflow, entering the product key when requested. For an already installed matching edition, use the Windows Activation settings or the administrator workflow documented for that server version. 5. Follow the version-specific deployment and activation guidance at https://learn.microsoft.com/windows-server/ . Do not change domain-controller or production-server editions without a verified migration plan. 6. Check activation and edition after restart. Configure roles and services separately.
