Confirm SQL version and edition, per-core or Server + CAL licensing, supported OS, and workload prerequisites before installation. Back up existing databases before any upgrade. 3. Obtain matching SQL Server setup media through your authorised Microsoft licensing/download channel. Use https://learn.microsoft.com/sql/database-engine/install-windows/install-sql-server for supported setup guidance. 4. For a new installation, run SQL Server Setup as an administrator and select the appropriate new standalone installation workflow. Enter the key at the Product Key step when prompted and select your licensed edition. 5. For a supported existing evaluation/edition upgrade, use Setup > Maintenance > Edition Upgrade and follow the supported version/edition upgrade path. Do not paste the key into SQL Server Management Studio. 6. Finish feature selection, service-account and authentication settings.
